SUMMARY:Maria's Grotto
DESCRIPTION:An unflinching examination of the subject of “honor killings\
,” still meted out as punishment in some Arab countries that use the tri
bal system. Though not a common occurrence in Palestine\, the risk is al
l too real for women who live with the possibility that even a suspicion
of “impropriety” can put their lives in danger.  Khoury explores the is
sue through the stories of four women whose experiences will horrify\, e
nrage\, surprise and inspire.  Winner of a Silver Muhr Award at the Duba
i Film Festival. Buthina Canaan Khoury \, born in Ramallah in 1966\, i
s a Palestinian independent filmmaker who established Majd Production Co
mpany in Ramallah city in 2000. The company's main objective is to produ
ce documentaries about women's social and political problems. Khoury rec

SUMMARY:Territories
DESCRIPTION:Larry Towell is the only Canadian member of the legendary Mag
num Photos agency\, known for its humanist and universal approach. His c
uriosity may guide him to the areas of conflict\, but his works express
a particular sense of intimacy. This documentary reveals the artist and
the man through his photographic work and his open meditations on life a
nd the creative process. The film was shot in the Occupied Palestinian T
erritories\, at the border between Mexico and the United States\, in New
York\, and in Southern Ontario\, Canada. Towell's breathtaking images a
re bound together thematically by multiple notions of territory—forbidde

division that conspire to restrict their lives. From internal checkpoint
s and the Separation Wall to gender norms and generational differences\,
this is the story of young people crossing the borders that separate th

SUMMARY:Bab Al-Shams: The Departure
DESCRIPTION:Adapted from Elias Khoury’s epic novel of the same name\, thi
s landmark film spans five decades\, starting in the years just before t
he Nakba (or “Catastrophe”) when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians w
ere driven from their homes and land. Intricately structured\, Bab el Sh
ams weaves together the life stories of a collection of refugees with gr
aceful yet haunting results. Critic Jenny Gheith calls it “a tour de for
ce” and adds “Nasrallah not only succeeds in his large-scale recreations
of demanding passages in Palestinian history\, but he infuses intimate
scenes with a nuanced tenderness.” Yousry Nasrallah was born to a Co
ptic-Christian family in Cairo. He graduated in economics and political
science at Cairo University. He then worked as a film critic and directi
ng assistant in Beirut from 1978 to 1982. He became an assistant to Yous

SUMMARY:Soy Palestino
DESCRIPTION:Palestinian filmmaker Osama Qashoo travels to Cuba and discov
ers that Havana has it’s own version of Palestinians. ‘Palestino’ is a r
acist term used in Cuba for poor black migrants coming from the east. Qa
 shoo befriends a homeless “palestino” named Luisito\, a clown-singer-mus
ician who lives in a wooden box. Luisito had not been home for seven yea
rs\, so he and Qashoo set off to meet his family on a musical-comedy jou
rney into the politics of today’s Cuba. Osama Qashoo began filming w
hen he was in his early twenties in reaction to the events of the Second
Intifada. After being given a broken camera from a friend\, Qashoo disc
overed that when he pretended to film street demonstrations and military
-enforced curfews\, the Israeli soldiers reacted. This experience that l
ed him to believe that filmmaking was a powerful medium for protecting h
uman rights and bringing Palestine to an international audience. He grad
uated from the National Film in Television School in England in 2005\, a
nd has screened his work throughout Europe\, the Middle East and the Ame
ricas.\n \n Co-presented with the Boston Latino International Film Fest

SUMMARY:Wedding In Galilee
DESCRIPTION:The elder of a Palestinian village is given permission to hol
d a traditional wedding for his son— on the condition that the Israeli m
ilitary governor and his staff be guests of honor. Wedding in Galilee is
a sensual and compelling meditation on two conflicting cultures that at
tempt to put aside their differences for one long day of celebration. Th
is richly detailed allegory of marriage\, tradition and national identit
y established Michel Khleifi as an extraordinary feature filmmaker. LA T
imes critic Michael Wilmington calls it\, "A fine film beautifully shot…
wonderfully acted.” Michel Khleifi was born in Nazareth in 1950. In
1970 he traveled to Belgium where he studied television and theater dire
cting. His films include: Fertile Memory (1980)\, Ma'loul Celebrates its
Destruction (1985)\, Wedding in Galilee (International Critics Prize\,
Cannes 1987)\, Canticle of the Stones (1990)\, L'Ordre du Jour (1993)\,
and Tale of the Three Jewels (1995). Tale of the Three Jewels is the fir
st feature film ever to be filmed in the Gaza Strip. It was made in the
days following the Hebron Massacre and before the arrival of the Palesti
nian Authority.\n \nThe Michel Khleifi program was made possible by the
participation of the Program in Cinema Studies at Northeastern Universi
 ty.

SUMMARY:Gaza Strip
DESCRIPTION:Gaza Strip follows a range of people and events following the
election of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon\, including the first m
ajor armed incursion into "Area A" by IDF forces during this intifada. A
lmost entirely in a verité style\, Gaza Strip is presented without narra
tion and focuses on ordinary Palestinians rather than politicians and pu
ndits. More observation than political argument\, Gaza Strip offers a ra
re look inside the stark realities of Palestinian life and death under I
sraeli military occupation. James Longley was born in the Oregon in 1
972 and received a film education at the University of Rochester\, Wesle
yan University and the Russian Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in Mos
cow. James received the Student Academy Award from the Academy of Motion

SUMMARY:The Zoo
DESCRIPTION:The daily scramble of life in the town of Qalqiliya through t
he eyes of Palestine's one and only zookeeper\, Dr. Sami Khader. Just 15
kilometers from Tel Aviv\, Qalqiliya is completely fenced off from the
rest of the world by Israel's security wall. Like the town itself\, the
Zoo has been hit hard by the conflict. Campbell accompanies the voluble
and entertaining Dr. Sami on a mission to rescue two baboons from a run-
down facility in Nablus. The degree of bureaucracy and checkpoint subter
fuge they face turns an already bizarrely symbolic task into a flabberga
sting exercise in absurdity. The Zoo is hilarious\, heartbreaking\, and
infuriating all at once. Hayden Campbell studied Film Making at the
University of Canterbury Fine Arts Film School in New Zealand. He reside

SUMMARY:Enraged
DESCRIPTION:A group of Jewish-Israeli activists break one of the country’
s most sacred taboos: they cross into the occupied territories to join t
he non-violent Palestinian resistance to the occupation. They are the mo
st radical leftist group in Israel. “Enraged” follows four activists as
they bring food into Palestinian villages under curfew\, tear down parts
of the separation barrier\, and serve as human shields trying to protec
t Palestinian demonstrators from Israeli soldiers.\n \nThe heroes of “
Enraged” pay a heavy price for their actions. At home in Israel they are
ostracized by their own society\; in Palestine\, they endure a similar
fate to that of the Palestinians—they are beaten\, sprayed with tear-gas
\, and shot at with rubber-coated bullets. One such bullet hits one of t
he film’s main characters in the head\, permanently impairing his eyesig
ht. “Enraged” exposes a face of the Israeli left that is rarely seen or
talked about.\n \n“Enraged” premiered at the Haifa International Film F
estival last October\, was broadcast several times on Israeli TV and was
shown in theaters in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.\n \n Eyal Eithcowich stu
died film and screen writing at New York University and HB Studio in New
York. In addition to Enraged\, he's directed a short fiction titled Pra
cticing Bitterness and is currently working on his new documentary\, Cit

ostracized by their own society\; in Palestine\, they endure a similar
fate to that of the Palestinians—they are beaten\, sprayed with tear-gas
\, and shot at with rubber-coated bullets. One such bullet hits one of t
he film’s main characters in the head\, permanently impairing his eyesig
ht. “Enraged” exposes a face of the Israeli left that is rarely seen or
talked about.\n \n“Enraged” premiered at the Haifa International Film F
estival last October\, was broadcast several times on Israeli TV and was
shown in theaters in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.\n \n Eyal Eithcowich stu
died film and screen writing at New York University and HB Studio in New
York. In addition to Enraged\, he's directed a short fiction titled Pra
cticing Bitterness and is currently working on his new documentary\, Cit
y for All. \n \n Anarchists Against the Wall activist Matan Cohen will
be present at the screening at Clark University in Worcester.

SUMMARY:The Zoo
DESCRIPTION:The daily scramble of life in the town of Qalqiliya through t
he eyes of Palestine's one and only zookeeper\, Dr. Sami Khader. Just 15
kilometers from Tel Aviv\, Qalqiliya is completely fenced off from the
rest of the world by Israel's security wall. Like the town itself\, the
Zoo has been hit hard by the conflict. Campbell accompanies the voluble
and entertaining Dr. Sami on a mission to rescue two baboons from a run-
down facility in Nablus. The degree of bureaucracy and checkpoint subter
fuge they face turns an already bizarrely symbolic task into a flabberga
sting exercise in absurdity. The Zoo is hilarious\, heartbreaking\, and
infuriating all at once. Hayden Campbell studied Film Making at the
University of Canterbury Fine Arts Film School in New Zealand. He reside
s in New Zealand and is working on his next documentary film project.

SUMMARY:La Terre Parle Arabe (The Land Speaks Arabic)
DESCRIPTION:In this documentary the late 19th century birth of Zionism—an
d its repercussions for Palestinians—is detailed with original source do
cuments\, rare archival footage\, testimonies of witnesses and interview
s with historians. All help to illustrate that the expulsion of the indi
genous Arab population from Palestine was far from an accidental result
of the 1948 war. This award-winning film shines a spotlight on the ethni
c cleansing of Palestine by the Zionist movement. \nMaryse Gargour wa

SUMMARY:The Roof
DESCRIPTION:The Roof is a lingeringly poetic film charting the Palestinia
n director Kamal Aljafari's journey back to his family and homeland Pale
stine. Despite the intense political background for the film\, its focus
is universal\, as the director explores the political and social contex
t for his story through a lyrical registration of the human capacity to
imagine and create worlds across time and space. At the heart of the fil
m is the belief that home is a feeling as well as a place. Even if a hom

SUMMARY:Route 181: Fragments of a Journey in Palestine-Israel
DESCRIPTION:Palestinian filmmaker Michel Khleifi and Israeli filmmaker Ey
al Sivan set off on a two-month cinematic journey along the north-south
axis of the land of their birth. They trace their trajectory on a map a
nd call it Route 181\, after U.N. Resolution 181\, which in 1947 called
for the partition Palestine into a Jewish and an Arab state. All those w
ho cross their path are given voice: men and women\, Israelis and Palest
inians\, young and old— all captured in the everyday life of a sixty-yea
r conflict. By portraying both the divide of the physical landscape and
that of the humans who inhabit it\, the film elegantly conveys a fuller
understanding. Michel Khleifi was born in Nazareth in 1950. In 1970 h
e traveled to Belgium where he studied television and theater. His films
include: Fertile Memory (1980)\, Ma'loul Celebrates its Destruction (19

SUMMARY:Wedding In Galilee
DESCRIPTION:The elder of a Palestinian village is given permission to hol
d a traditional wedding for his son— on the condition that the Israeli m

tempt to put aside their differences for one long day of celebration. Th
is richly detailed allegory of marriage\, tradition and national identit
y established Michel Khleifi as an extraordinary feature filmmaker. LA T
